Measurement & Geometry – 5th Grade – Make A Quilt Project Based Learning

⭐ This low-prep/no-prep measurement & geometry project based learning activity will have your 5th grade students fully engaged in meaningful math practice. Students use their measurement and geometry skills to solve problems related to quilt making. Students follow instructions on quilt making while measuring lengths, reading clues, counting and drawing lines, dividing into equal square units, and more. Additional “challenge activities” engage students and develop further understanding of the concepts and skills.

⭐ This resource contains a standards-based unit in both a low-prep printable PDF and a no-prep Google Slides format – so it’s the perfect activity for any classroom.

⭐ 5th grades students practice the following CCSS math standards to solve problems related to quilt making.

  • 5.NBT.B.6 Find whole number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors. Illustrate and explain using equations, arrays, and/or area models.
  • 5.NF.A.2 Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole.
  • 5.NF.B.4 Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
  • 5.NF.B.5 Interpret multiplication as scaling.
  • 5.MD.A.1 Convert among different sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system.
  • 5.MD.B.2 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit.
  • 5.G.B.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.
